The Basics

My name is Lacyn (LAY-suhn) and I am a licensed mortician. Young, blonde, and female, I am not your typical undertaker. A terrible accident propelled me into this morbid profession and I couldn't be happier with my lot in death! But there are many ingredients in my life's recipe that made me into the woman I am today.

A Horse Trainer

I grew up becoming a horse trainer like my father. An unfortunate training accident in 2001 sent me spiraling into a coma and ended my training career, but it didn’t break my relationship with horses. After my recovery, I competed for and won a PRCA Rodeo Queen title. Then, in 2006, I began competing as a SASS Mounted Shooter- placing 3rd in the World for my division. “Emma Balmer” is my witty shooting alias, hinting at my profession.

A Fashion Model

I'm happy to say that I didn't get too sucked-in while I modeled on the catwalks of New York City and Denver, but there were some pretty fun times. Besides that, I did win a couple of awesome awards when I modeled in NYC. More recently, I have appeared in magazines. The picture to the left was taken at a show for DVLP Clothing. The photo below was taken during a run-through before a show in New York City. Other models are seated down front :)

A Mortician

Following my accident, I decided to pursue a degree in Mortuary Science. I started by volunteering at a local funeral home and when I had my college degrees in my hand, I followed my professional dreams to the Northwest where I now embalm and direct funerals as a Licensed Mortician. I also plan on continuing my education to get a Master's Degree this fall.

A Writer

It all started with the internet and my blog about funeral directing. I used writing as an outlet- a way to deal with the frustrations and emotional turmoil my job often brings. Since starting the blog, I have written many popular online articles about funeral directing and pre-planning. My close friends and family have enjoyed lively stories about my funerary misadventures. I recently had my writing published in American Funeral Director, a major trade magazine. Writing is one of my many passions and my memoir detailing my horse training accident and resulting career choice, From Horses to Corpses, is well on its way to completion.

My Family

My Husband

His name is Josh and he makes the best damn hamburgers in the universe. Josh is a Firefighter/EMT and he's working to complete his Paramedic training. His tattoos are cool (my favorite being the headstone with my name on it!) and they make him look like a badass when he rides his scooter :) No, but seriously... scooters rock!

My Brother

My very tall, very funny younger brother, Alex, is pictured here (with all of the tattoos) with our awesome cousin Jesse and his beautiful wife Kelsey. My little brother is a tattoo artist, bartender, and a comedian. He’ll keep you laughing for hours!

Check out my Photos & Videos page to see his antics :)

My Parents

Here is my mom, Shelley, at work. She's a midwife. Yeah, yeah, yeah... she brings 'em in and I take 'em out.

You can see my dad, Lamoyn, in the photo below with his 2008 bull. He's a horse trainer and we've spent a lot of time together competing as mounted shooters.

My Grandma

My Grandma Carol has got to be the coolest grandma on the planet. No, seriously... she goes to every rock concert she can get tickets for (and she gets awesome seats because she's in a wheelchair) and she has always adored Jon Bon Jovi!!!!!! She's crazy about that man and his big hair band.

Other than that, she's talented at machine embroidery and does it commercially. Carol also loves to play B-I-N-G-O and sit in the sun.

Here's a picture of Grandma Carol and Mom. See the resemblance?

My Great Aunt

Aunt June is a tough bar owner that doesn’t take any crap from anybody. She’s an incredible lady!! June owns the only bar in a small, picturesque mountain town. With my relocation to the Northwest, June is only 3 hours away and we get to visit often. I love to drink and dance with June and because of her, I have married the love of my life! In this photo, June is holding our Jack Russell, Trocar. To see our other animals, Click Here.
